The Voices of Bells

By Tian Yuan (Translated by Naomi Cui)

West Lake

Verdant hills

Like a wall, unbroken,

Protect the lake’s surface

From trespassing winds

Of any direction.

A horse-drawn carriage.

In it the Emperor of Song,

Arrives, desperate, and he

Settles in this new land:

This land of the Wu tongue.

Both Wuyue and Bianliang

Now marked deeply by

Horse hooves and carriage wheels.

The bald-headed monks of Lingyin Temple

—Pure and transcendental they be—

Knock on bells which echo and

Reverberate all throughout

The valleys: A final lament.

A bird flits through my mind

With every quiver its feathers fall,

Catkins floating atop the lake,

Little clouds that eventually drown.

West Lake, O West Lake!

You are a radiant bronze mirror

Polished to great beauty by

Dongpo’s very own hand.

The ferryman’s boat songs

Sweep across the water

1No more.

The boat tether ropes

Snake like the Grand Canal;

West Lake’s own ribbon dance

Connecting South and North.

West Lake, O West Lake!

You are the dainty curve of a Jiangnan beauty’s waist.

Because of you the people speak with sweet tongues,

And the voices of bells, sweeter still.
