From green bin to house: raccoons in Toronto

Anyone who lives in Toronto has probably made some contacts with raccoons through all the years. Generally speaking raccoon usually gives us an impression as being a harmless fluffy and cute little animals. However in reality raccoons could be problematic once they start to become a part of your daily life.

The first issue of having raccoons around is that they love to invade your back yard and look through all your garbage. This is relatively easy to deal with before they make themselves comfortable between your walls. The principle of keeping raccoons out is take out your trash right before the garbage truck comes to your door. Never leave unattached trash in your yard. If you can’t do that, seal all you trash within containers or put the trash bin into your garage. Don’t forget to spill some chill power on top. It will drive them away.

After taking care of the trash problem now let’s talk about what happens if your raccoon neighbor invite themselves into your house. Here is a news showing raccoons moving into someone’s house:

As you can see, this raccoon family moves in to their new home (which obviously does not belong to them) paw by paw. We would love to believe that this is probably a mistake on the raccoon’s end and to be honest this is considered as an act of brave in Toronto. Yes we are nice people.

In reality Toronto has a deeper tie with the raccoon. Back in 2018 Toronto was named the city of raccoons. Even though people felt frustrated when these fluffy bandits broke the green recycle bins, they still try to live with them instead of casting them out completely. Sometime you will find people pry for dead raccoons on the street and bury them afterwards.

Right now the raccoons are not going anyway. Due to climate change, the population of raccoon is on the rise. In the future they might migrant to the north which is a more suitable living environment for them.

Of course, the raccoon was here first so in another way around we are living in raccoon’s world. They have to check in the green bin as a result of human taking out raccoon’s  territories. Perhaps it is matter of time before all of raccoons move into our houses. When they do make sure you seek professional help. Despite their cuteness looking, they are quite destructive.
