Infrastructure Ontario Announces $19 Billion Investment in Ontario Line in Toronto

Jennifer French, Ontario NDP infrastructure critic said, “the Minister of Transportation needs to explain to Ontarians why these projects are already falling behind and why subway costs have more than doubled under the Ford government.”

Infrastructure Ontario demonstrated that the authorities will make a $19 billion investment in Ontario Line in Toronto to build the subway project from the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place.

Ford said in an April 2019 press release, “our government is investing in transportation to bring relief and new opportunities to transit users and commuters.”

Infrastructure Ontario, launched a series of documents, shows the cost of the project up to 50% more by 2027 to support the Ontario Line in Toronto.

Toronto Centre NDP MPP and former councilor Kristyn Wong-Tam demanded increased accountability.

Wong-Tam said, “we are calling on this government to increase accountability and oversight over Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario, so transit riders won’t suffer high transit fares and poorer service while P3 financiers and private consultants get rich.”

“Construction projects worldwide are facing economic challenges with rising inflation costs and supply chain shortages. This is not unique to the Ontario Line, or any other critical infrastructure projects our government is delivering. As all our transit projects move forward, we will continue to ensure that taxpayers receive the best value possible,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
