The 41st-ranked Canadians were unable to hold off Croatia, falling 4-1 and ending their chances of moving on to the competition’s knockout stages. Canada opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Belgium. After playing No. 22 Morocco on Thursday to wrap up Group F competition, Canada will depart.
Croatia, which finished second to France and was ranked 12th in the world in Russia four years ago, is brimming with talent from elite clubs, and its class was apparent in overcoming an early 1-0 lead.
“I am disappointed in the result. It was not easy. We did our best, we fought the entire game. We’re looking forward to the next game and hopefully we get some points,” said Davies.

With the first goal scored for Canada Soccer at a Men’s World Cup, Alphonso Davies writes history.
The 32-nation tournament in Qatar has a total winnings of US$440 million, with the teams that do not move past the group stage, like Canada, receiving US$9 million each.
Additionally, each of the 32 competitors received US$1.5 million in advance of the competition to help with travel expenses.
The final winner in Qatar will get a prize of US$42 million, and the runner-up will receive US$30 million.
At least, “everyone came out here,” says Alphonso Davies, and “did our best and fought every single minute.”
