After the publishing of the report Wild Species 2020, Terry Duguid, parliamentary secretary to the minister of environment and climate change, holds a news conference.
The most recent study, Wild Spices 2020, to be released. It evaluated the condition of wildlife across Canada. More than 50,000 species, including more than 2,000 that are in danger of going extinct, are endangered, a much higher number than in any prior report.
The status and distribution of wild species in Canada are the subject of the Wild Species 2020 report, which was put together by researchers employed by the federal, provincial, and territorial governments.
The fifth national evaluation, Wildlife Species 2020, ranks everything from animals and birds to lichens and fungus.
Of those, 873 are in grave danger, primarily as a result of human activities that have encroached on their habitat.
A precise risk assessment can only be given to around half of the more than 50,000 species in Canada that are included by the report. One-fifth of those species are also thought to be vulnerable.
Terry Duguid, parliamentary secretary to Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, said in a media statement,“a crucial step in preventing species loss is to identify which species exist, where they are found, and their status. That’s why this national assessment, conducted every five years, is so essential. ”
“You can’t do that without a solid baseline of knowledge. Knowledge is power.”
