Toronto’s official Christmas tree lights up at Nathan Phillips Square

Nathan Phillips Square is the location of the event’s “star,” a 16.75-meter (55-foot) Christmas tree from Baldwin, Ontario. Over the length of about eight hours, seven employees built the tree and adorned it with more than 300,000 energy-efficient lights and 500 decorations. On Nov. 26, the 56th annual Cavalcade of Lights, presented by Desjardins Financial Group, officially began with the lighting of the first tree.

Mayor John Tory said in a statement, “the arrival of the City’s official Christmas tree on Nathan Phillips Square has always been a milestone event signalling the start of the holiday season. I hope Torontonians will enjoy the celebrations on Nathan Phillips Square throughout December and into the New Year.”

Till January 7, Cavalcade of Lights will be present. Nathan Phillips Square will be aglow with captivating light shows and festive decorations that celebrate international light festivals and cultural holidays.

“Inspired by international lantern, fire and light festivals, this year’s festivities will transform City Hall and its surrounds into a dazzling wonderland each night,” the city wrote.

Opening day was in various locations: Main Stage, Circle Stage, the ice rink, Bay Street, and around the square.

From December 2 to December 23, Nathan Phillips Square will host the Holiday Fair in the Square. An artisan market, a North Pole activation, and a holiday midway with rides and activities will all be featured during the event.
